Lessons from someone who reconnected the cable

If you are going to have a live TV streaming service, you are not going to save any money. Keep that in mind up front. The content owners control the content and the cost for the combination of content and internet is going to be about the same no matter which way you go. Without content money, your cable provider will be charging you more for internet (and you will need a lot more). If you research the ownership of media you will find that there are like 3 companies that own all the content and they also own the majority of the cable companies, so guess what...you're gonna pay them.

From a channel availability perspective, each streaming service is owned by a different content provider with others as investors and is missing a chunk of channels from the others. Decide which channels you care about and select your service based on that or you will not be happy. It also depends on where you live if you are looking for local channels as some local companies are owned by companies that won't sign agreements with the streaming services because their parent is a cable company that isn't one that also owns content (Comcast, Spectrum, etc). In the end, the content is what you want and the content owners control the distribution, so you are going to pay them one way or the other.

The value to cord cutting from my perspective comes if you change your viewing habits and move away from a scheduled TV viewer. We all grew up watching what was on based on a schedule, if you move to content based viewer (ignoring the schedule and watching when you want to), streaming is great and I think you will find Hulu the best choice because their overall content collection dwarfs the other services. Youtube talks about their unlimited DVR but that's because they don't have the content library, hulu is basically a library of everything you could want to DVR without having to DVR it.

I've heard the discussions about the interfaces, I don't get that. For the LiveTV services, they are the same. You get a guide with all the channels listed and you scroll through it. Hulu's base interface is content focused though (here are the shows), but if you select the livetv icon, you will see the same interface as your old school cable guide.
